This is a series of videos produced by Nick Maxwell from Nick’s Tutorials. Nick’s Tutorials makes excellent Ableton Live tutorials and sound libraries. Nick found Kairatune so much fun to work with that he made a series of tutorials, The Kairatune Video Manual, for you. The series serves as a manual for Kairatune’s core features as well as an introduction to sound design for anyone wishing to have more control over the sound of their synth.
- Generator Section
- Pitch Section
- Spread & Amp Section
- Filter & LFO
- Delay & Phaser
- EQ, Master Volume & Preset Chooser
In episode 1 we’ll talk about what Kairatune is, and establish a roadmap for the series.
2. Generator Section
In episode 2 we look at the most important part of Kairatune, the generator section. This is where you define a raw oscillator sound, whether and how that oscillator is multiplied to make a thicker sound, and lots of modulation of both phase and fine tuning.
3. Pitch Section
In episode 3 we’ll look at one of the most interesting parts of Kairatune, the pitch section, featuring several different points of modulation. This is where things can start geting really weird in the best way possible.
4. Spread & Amp Section
In episode 4 we take a look at how the Spread section helps you define a wider space for your sound to take up in the stereo spectrum. We also go through the Amp section, including a brief rundown of how envelopes work in synthesizers.
5. Filter & LFO
In episode 5 we’ll look at the filter and LFO sections in Kairatune. The filter section is one of the uniquely defining features of Kairatune because of its inherent keyscaling where the cutoff frequency is always defined relative to the incoming pitch.
6. Delay & Phaser
In episode 6 we cover the delay and phaser sections of Kairatune. The delay section is especially unique with two parallel delay lines with different filter configurations. The bandpass delay line actually has the filter in the feedback loop which means you can design some pretty cool delays that morph over time as they fade away!
7. EQ, Master Volume & Preset Chooser
In episode 7 we’ll finish up with the Kairatune interface, briefly talking about the flexible EQ section, the master volume section and the preset chooser as well as a tip on creating a simple init patch for yourself.
